Introduction

We will be learning about Kansas State emblems and symbols.  We will explore what each of them and their significance to Kansas’s history.  In the end we will be doing a presentation in groups that will be about the emblems and symbols. 

This section of our class will focus on the significance of why Kansas has state emblems and symbols and what they are.

 



The Task

By the end of this section the class will have learned:

  • What Kansas state emblems and symbols are;
  • Why they are important to Kansas;
  • Be able to gather information;
  • Be able to present the information gathered in an organized manner;
  • Be able to learn something new and interesting about Kansas.

If the final will involve a power point presentation and a two page report using Word.



The Process

For this section the teacher will have three main activities that will be consist of a crossword puzzle, a collage and a presentation.

The Crossword Puzzle:

1.    The teacher will provide a crossword puzzle for students to work on with clues about certain Kansas emblems and symbols.

2.    The students will use library or Internet resources to find the answers.

3.    This will be due during the presentations.

The Collage about Kansas:

1.    The teacher will provide a sheet of paper for the students, along with a short explaination of what should be on the sheet of paper.

2.    Students will find pictures out of magazines, newspapers, clipart and other pictures or words they can find.

3.    Students will be graded on completeness and creativity.

4.    Students will also need to write a short explanation of what they put on their collage.

The Presentation:

1.    The teacher will break the students up into groups of 4, 5, or 6.

2.    The teacher will then provide a topic for each group to find information about.

3.    The teacher will have the librarian pull information pertaining to Kansas.

4.    The teacher will provide what information will be needed for the presentation.

5.    Students will then have class time to gather the information needed and prepare their presentation.

6.    Once the students have information on their topic they will be able to get on the computer to put together their power point.

This is the rubric that can be used for the power point presentation.
